The WJZZ Jazz Culture Manifesto
I. The Sound of Excellence
We believe that Jazz is not merely a genre, but the highest expression of human ingenuity. At WJZZ, we do not play background music; we broadcast the heartbeat of civilization. We are the curators of the “Gold Standard,” dedicated to the mastery of the craft and the elevation of the listener.
II. The Heritage of the First
Our authority is born from our history. As the world’s oldest jazz station, we carry the torch of the pioneers while fueling the fires of the innovators. We honor the legends by ensuring their brilliance remains the definitive sound of the modern era.
III. The Detroit Soul, The Global Pulse
Rooted in the grit and rhythm of Detroit, we speak a universal language. Jazz was born of struggle and perfected in the pursuit of freedom. We take that Detroit spirit and project it across the globe, establishing Jazz as the preeminent cultural force for every citizen of the world.
IV. The Connoisseur’s Oath
We cater to the sophisticated, the curious, and the bold. We believe in the power of the “Cool”—an effortless excellence that transcends trends. We are committed to making Jazz the most popular genre on Earth, not by lowering our standards, but by raising the world’s expectations.
Diversity & Inclusion
At WJZZ Detroit, we recognize that Jazz is, by its very nature, the music of inclusion. It is a genre built on the foundation of diverse voices coming together in harmony and improvisation. We believe that our strength lies in the plurality of perspectives that have shaped this art form from its African roots to its global reach.
Diversity is not a metric we track; it is the soul of the music we play. We stand as a beacon of unity in Detroit and beyond, proving that when different rhythms collide, the result is always something more beautiful, more powerful, and more profound.
